Louisiana Lighthouses

Louisiana Lighthouses

With a geographic area in the lower section of the USA, the southern part of the state of Louisiana boarders with the Gulf of Mexico and the beginning of the Mississippi River. With one of the largest ports of the region, in New Orleans, having adequate lighting and a safe area for boats to dock… lighthouses in LA is needed. Also there are a lot of oil rigs in the middle of the ocean that ship their oil to different parts of Louisiana, and it would coast millions of dollars in lost oil if these massive ships sprung a leak or worse yet crashed because of not being able to navigate safely. That is not to mention the terrible damage to the natural elements and wild life in the area if there was an oil spill from any of those ships. What makes the southern boarder of Louisiana so dangerous and difficult is the fact that the area is so shallow and is pretty much a swamp in most areas, potential disaster waiting to happen for any sea dwelling vessel.

Aside from the state naturally being setup like this on the shore for many years, what made it was hurricane Katrina and strong storms like Rita that made things even worse. The Louisiana lighthouse that was documented as enduring the most damage eventually collapsed as a result of these unexpected and uncontrollable events. There were others that didn’t even make it through the storm, and by the time it was over they were no where to be found but instead plenty of remains were thrown about in literally every direction. These tragic losses to these lighthouses in Louisiana were not the first and likely not the last, since in the past few decades there have been a handful of light stations that couldn’t stand the test of time. What makes these events even worse is that fact that for a time there was an effort being made to protect and preserve the lighthouses in this state, but after all of those powerful storms the attention that was shown in this regard pretty much disappeared. Nevertheless, there are still tons of lighthouses in the state that are worth visiting, and learning about; all of which you will be able to get more info about by reading below.
